My Frustrated Opinion

My frustrated opinion

The IPP sentence was abolished because the European Courts of Human Rights labelled it unlawful and inhumane. Yet thousands of us are still languishing behind bars with no hope of freedom. Many prisoners succumb to addiction and self-harm, also mental health issues and tragically many commit suicide because they can’t see no light at the end of the tunnel.

Prisoners families and friends are also going through a sentence. Relationships have broken down and come to an end. Children have grown up wondering what it would be like to have two parents. Bonds broken never able to have that time again.

The British government are susceptible to public opinion, I think it’s a disgrace and unacceptable that this sentence has not been retrospectively changed when it’s been deemed unlawful. When the Extended Determinate Sentence was introduced in 2012 all IPP’s should have had our sentences changed to EDS sentence or a minimum and maximum sentence we have to serve.

Instead, we have to go on a parole board hearing and convince 3 judges that we are no longer a risk and can be released.

I deserved to get a sentence. Punishment and rehabilitation are key factors in people not coming through that revolving door back to prison. IPP prisoners are being punished serving an unlawful sentence that the government are too gutless to retrospectively change.
